Alex Kotch (he/him), Senior Program Manager, Research
Alex leads Sunstone’s research program, investigating the fossil fuel and utility industries and the political networks that surround them.
Throughout his career, Alex has exposed corruption, inequality, and extremism wherever he can find it. Prior to joining Sunstone, he worked as an investigative journalist, following the money in politics, philanthropy, and business as a staff reporter and editor at several national publications. Alex and his team at International Business Times won a SABEW award for business reporting, and his series on hate group funding inspired the formation of the Hate Is Not Charitable Campaign. In 2020, he co-founded a nonprofit that built a news app for independent media.
Alex is also a woodworker and musician, and he has a Ph.D. in music composition. A North Carolina native, he now lives in Portland, Oregon, where you can find him riding his road bike, hiking trails, or making canine friends.
